Chicago Marathon Experience

Well, the Chicago Marathon is done and I've had a few days to reflect on my experience there.  First of all, I had a great time in Chicago.  It is great to have supportive friends there to cheer you on and motivate you during these endeavors.  Secondly, being in Chicago was a fun time and I had a blast seeing the city.  Also, I got to meet Dean Karnazes (this guy is a straight up bad@ss).

Now, in regards to the Marathon, I did set a PR.  I ran a 2:58:51 and pr'd by nearly 6 minutes.  I'd have to say the work that I put in to Chicago, far outweighed the effort I had put into any previous Marathons I had trained for.  Therefore, I had high expectations for myself.  I also try to set the goals high.  I think of two things when I set them. #1 Is it attainable? #2 Is it challenging?  Therefore, I had my eyes set on a 2:55 or less Marathon.  I really actually thought I was in shape to run a 2:52 and I still do actually.  That is why I was glad that I pr'd and broke 3 hours, but still disappointed that I didn't reach what I thought I was capable of.  Of course, I must realize that every race doesn't go as planned and that there are better days with cooler temps and more favorable conditions, but still. I do however have to think of things from a positive stand point.  This just adds more fuel to the fire and it's going to motivate me to shoot for higher goals.  Plus, I know that no matter what time I achieve, I'm never going to be satisfied and will always want to push myself to achieve something greater.  It's been a great year overall though, I've pr'd in every race distance, learned a lot about myself, and have realized that there really is not  a cap to your potential.  I truly believe that if I keep training and pushing myself I can reach some unthinkable marathon times.

It's nice to now take a bit of break, refresh, and rethink my goals.  It had been a long, hard, tough summer.  Most weeks involved 85-100 miles which admittedly was often times very training.  However, I love this stuff and love pushing myself.  I've got my sights set on the Qualifer in Midland, Michigan in May as my next target road marathon.  I'm not making any bets as to what I'll do there, but I know one thing, it's gonna be damn good.

It's also important to acknowledge that I lost my grandpa this week and I was thinking of him out there on the run.  Chicago was for you Gramps, RIP!

Summer Racing and Chicago Marathon Buildup

Well, June is in the books and so far this summer has been a good time.  I've been running tons and tons, more than I ever have before.  I have pretty much been racing every weekend lately.  It has been enjoyable, but I have to admit lately it's seemed a bit tiresome.  It's hard to go out every weekend and give your best effort.  So, I'm hanging up the racing shoes for the next month to focus on some hard training for Chicago.  I have however had a great past month that I'd like to reflect on.

I started the month off with the first annual Yankee Springs Trail run.  This may have been the most fun I've ever had at a race.  I am signed up for the North Country Trail Marathon next month, which I'm really excited for.  I don't think I am going to quite go all out in it just because my main focus is Chicago, but I'd like to run it in the 3:30-3:40 range.  The following weekend I ran the Cereal City Classic and took third overall with a 36:51 time.  I felt pretty good during the race.  It was a challenge, like all races are but I was satisfied with the progress I've been making.  The following weekend I tackled the Kalamazoo Klassic double (a 10k followed by a 5k), with the infamous Maple Street Hill.  I've got to admit I was kind of dreading this race, since last year I remember the hill absolutely kicking my ass.  However, this year I ran the race much smarter and was able to tackle the hill with the right amount of energy to finish the rest of the race at a good pace.  I actually had a better pace at the this race then the previous week.  I won my age group in the 10k and finished 2nd in my age group in the 5k.

After that race, that put me at 4 straight weeks of races, so I thought why stop there?  I signed up for a Half Marathon in Ionia.  This was the first annual race and I didn't really know what to expect.  When I got there I noticed there wasn't even chip timing and it was a pretty low key race.  The only problem with that is that there weren't many people running, which makes it hard to stay in the mindset that "this is a race".  That's something that can be very beneficial when running 13.1 miles as fast as you can.  The course volunteers weren't the best at providing directions and I ran past the half turn and went on the 5k course at the beginning.  Luckily I noticed and turned around fairly quickly.  I was in second place at that time and dropped back to fourth.  I caught up to the guy in second place and we ran together for a few miles.  At mile 3 there was a hill that made the Maple street hill look like an absolute joke.  It was enormous.....and on dirt roads in the summer heat.  Not exactly ideal conditions for a fast race time.  I battled the challenging hilly, country road course and managed to finish 2nd in 1:22:38, just 2 minutes behind the first place guy.  He actually told me that he had run a 1:18 and 1:16 half earlier in the year, so that made me feel better about my time.  I really feel like I could throw down a half in the 1:20:XX range right now.  Regardless, I had a great time and got a good workout in.  That capped off the month of June; 1 Marathon, 1 Half Marathon, 2 10ks, and a 5k.

I am now entering week 5 of my Marathon training schedule for Chicago.  The last few weeks I have ran the most miles I ever have in a week (85 and 83).  I truly feel like the high mileage is going to help my training.  However, I do feel that it is important to give myself cutback weeks every now and then and to allow myself sufficient rest/recovery days when needed.  Although, I have been running 7 days a week lately.  Also, I have wanted to do a bit more biking and leg strengthening, but it's difficult to fit in with all of the running.  I am going to make an effort to add some strength training for the legs in the coming weeks.  I have also noticed that weightlifting has become more and more of a challenge during the mileage buildup.  I often feel very drained from running to be able to put in a decent effort in the gym.  I'm just trying to maintain a decent muscle base right now though.

I am really looking forward to the Chicago Half and Full Marathons in the coming months.  These are my main goals for the year.  I'd also like to knock out a good 10k and 5k time in the fall.  I think I am worthy of a sub 36 10k by the end of the year and a low 17 minute 5k at this point.

I'm having an absolute blast training.  It's been great training with people as well.  It's nice having people to help push your harder.  I am also trying to get sufficient rest and stretching.  The main thing I need to focus on right now is my diet.  It's scary to think that I can run over 80 miles a week and still at times gain weight.  I believe putting extra emphasis on my food intake over the next several months will be key to throwing down some good times in Chicago.  I'm looking forward to what the rest of the summer holds.  Until next time.....

My First Trail Marathon

Well, that was one helluva an experience!  Today I ran my first Trail Marathon.  It was quite an adventure to say the least.  I had been coming back from injury after the Kalamazoo Marathon, so needless to say I took it easy out there and that was the plan from the get go.  I just wanted to get a good long run in, because Chicago Marathon training officially begins Monday.  The goal was to run the race in under 4 hours.  From people I had talked to, trail running adds a good minute plus per mile to your race time.  Anyways, I wanted to enjoy myself and it's safe to say I did that today.  After the first few miles, I started thinking, "what have I got myself into"?  There were some pretty steep hills out there, not to mention covered in big rocks.  There were downed trees we were forced to jump over, stairs we had to run down that literally had two foot steps, I swallowed bugs, and almost lost my shoe in some of the thickest mud I've ever seen.  It was a whole different ballgame compared to road racing, but I gotta say I absolutely loved it!  I think I might be addicted.  There were people out there running the double marathon (freakin maniacs, I thought I was crazy)!  I got to the last aid station, and they were like, "nice work, you're in 3rd place".  I was like, "wow, I didn't expect that at all".  I ended up finishing in roughly 3:55, my slowest Marathon time ever:)  The only thing that stunk, was twisting the hell out of my ankle 100 yards from the finish.  It wasn't too severe though, so I should be okay.

On another note, I ran the Run to Climax on Monday (Memorial Day).  The weather was not in my favor that day at all.  The heat was absolutely brutal.  I still managed 4th overall, but it certainly was nowhere near my best race.  Oh well, not every race goes your way.

I am looking forward to gearing up for some hard training for Chicago now.  Track workouts are beginning this week bright and early.  I smell some 4am wakeup times for some before work runs and several two-a days.  I really need to focus on the diet, getting in quality workouts and races, and putting in the mileage.  I'm excited!  Until next time......

Update and Summer Races

Well, it's been quite awhile since I've updated this.  It's been one crazy month.  My best friend got married, my brother and sister graduated from High School, I've been slammed in my Marketing class for my M.B.A. and I ran another marathon:)  Needless to say, I've had a pretty busy schedule.  After Boston, I recovered pretty quickly and was able to get a good 20 mile run in before Kalamazoo.  I have to admit Boston put a damper on my confidence a bit and I ran the Inaugural Kalamazoo Marathon much more conservatively than I should have. I finished feeling as if I had a lot more left in the tank and I wasn't even sore the next day, except for my left foot which got completely jacked up due to the shoe choice that I wore in the race (not nearly enough support, bad idea).  I did however, set a PR though in running a 3:04:25 and finished 21st overall and 3rd in my age group, so I can't complain.  Also, it left me feeling much more confident as I gear up for the summer race season.  I am going to be running a ton of races this summer, but overall I have a few main goals that I want to accomplish by the end of the year.  They are as follows:  Run a sub 3 hour marathon during my training for Chicago, Run a sub 1:18 half marathon at the Valpo Half Marathon in November, run a 10k in under 36 minutes, and set a pr in the 5k (hopefully getting close or under 17 minutes).  I am going to be completing several Marathons, and others races throughout the summer in preparation for the Chicago Marathon (my main goal).  I would love to break 2:50 there, which I think is a very reasonable goal.

That being said, the Marathons that I am running to gear up for Chicago I plan on running at a less then all out pace.  I have incorporated several trail marathons, which I have never done before.  Next weekend will be my first at Yankee Springs.  I am planning on running roughly a 3:30 Marathon and getting in a good long run in.  I really don't know what to expect in a trail run, but I assume my pace will be slowed due to the terrain.  Also, they only have 4 total water stops for the 2 loop race (which I think is ridiculous), so I may run with a water belt or backpack, which will surely slow my pace.
My race schedule for the next month is as follows:
Run to Climax 7k-May 30th
Yankee Springs Trail Marathon-June 4th
Cereal City 10k-June 11th
Kalamazoo Klassic 10k and 5k-June 18th
Charlevoix Marathon-June 25th.

I am excited to see what the months ahead have to offer and am looking forward to getting back to some hardcore training after finally getting my foot feeling back to normal (I could only run a total of 30 miles in the 2 weeks following the Kalamazoo Marathon).  Needless to say, next time I run a marathon, I will be running it with a shoe that offers a lot more support than the Brooks ST 5s (very bad idea).  Oh well, you live and you learn.

I am going to continue to update my blog on a weekly basis and as I begin my training for the Chicago Marathon I will probably do so with less detail as I did for Boston.  I will however posts race results and good workouts as well as how my training has been going.  Until next time.....

2011 Boston Marathon

Wow! What an experience!  When I first walked out of the subway and came up above ground into Copley Square, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy and became a bit teary eyed.  I had finely made it:)  This was a moment I had dreamed of for so long and now it was a reality.  For so long I didn't even think I would ever be able to make it here.  Now, all doubts were squandered.  This was Boston baby!  Boston!

Boston stands for so many things to me.  It is isn't just about running as fast as I can to qualify for the race, no, not at all.  It's about all of the hurdles I have overcome that got me to this point.  It stands for all of the tough things I've succumbed in my life. It's about those people that tell you that you can't do this or can't do that.  Well, to the naysayers-I'm in Boston now and I believe I can do anything.

Boston taught me that there is no cap on your potential and I truly believe that.  Boston gave me more and more confidence; confidence that I didn't have before.  Boston also gave my life a renewed sense of purpose.  Once you achieve something of this magnitude you doubt yourself less.  This was the Marathon of all Marathons and here I was in Copley Square on Bolyston street staring at the 115th Boston Marathon sign in absolute awe.

For those that know me, it's become quite evident that I am an obsessed Marathoner and this was especially true in my buildup to this race.  I lived, sleeped, and breathed Boston Marathon training.  If a thought didn't cross my mind about the race for one single hour over the past 18 weeks, I was surprised.  I poured everything into this dream and I was going to give my best effort when I got the chance.  To me, with any Marathon I complete-it's just the icing on the cake.  The real accomplishment is the 18 weeks prior, of grinding day in and day out.  The countless hours of training and busting my ass on the road, in the gym, on my bike, as well as the countless sacrifices I make it my daily live are the real reward.  The day of the Marathon is just something to symbolize all of that hard work.

I could sit here and write a novel about this experience, but I'll try and limit myself to just a few pages.  I have so many difference feelings about Boston.  First of all, I realize it is an amazing feat, something I will look back on when I'm older and be able to tell my kids and grandkids about.  But, it is also another race for me.  So, I still look at it and analyze it just as I would any other race.  That being said, my performance was less than optimal for my standards.  Honestly, I was a bit disappointed in myself.  I know that I am capable of far more than what I brought to the road in Boston.  So, without further adue, here is the race analysis.

RACE DAY
The alarm was set for 5am and I knew it'd be difficult to sleep on this night.  I actually was able to sleep pretty much straight thru until 4am.  But, at that point I was wide eyed and bushy tailed.  I hopped out of bed and began the prerace routine.  I shaved my face until it was baby clean.  I showered to warm up my muscles a bit.  I then stretched and put on my race clothes and warm-ups.  The train left for North Station (TD Garden) at 6:02am, so we left the hotel at 5:30.  We'd already had our fair share of late arrivals, hence missing our train, so we left with plenty of time to spare this time.  Once we arrived to North Station, we then rounded the bend outside to the underground commuter rail that was bound for Park St (this is where the buses boarded in route to Hopkinton).  Immediately once I boarded the train, there were swarms of Marathoners.  It was kind of funny seeing how different everyone appeared as far as their prerace excitement.  Some sat nervous and anxious and waited until our stop, while others chit chatted constantly.  I just sat there and listened, trying to remain calm.  When I exited the commuter and emerged above ground in the city, I was greeted by the most massive lines I have ever seen of Marathoners boarding the dozens of buses lined up along the Boston Common.  The winds were gusting at 20+ miles an hour and my warm-ups did nothing to keep me warm out there.  The line moved quicker than I thought, but it still took nearly a half hour to board the bus.

Once, on the bus we were in route to Hopkinton.  At this point it was already 7:30.  I had a slight urge to urinate once I boarded the bus, which only got greater and greater as the hour and fifteen minute journey continued.  All I could think about was how badly I had to pee.  Finally, we got to our destination.  It was a medium sized High School in Hopkinton.  I exited the bus and followed suit of many other runners and darted for the woods to relieve myself.  I had never seen so many people peeing in an unauthorized area at one time.  It was kind of funny.  After that, I followed the long line of runner's into Athlete's village.  This was the area that all of the runners used to stretch, fuel up on water, gatorade, energy bars and gels, etc. before the big race.  I followed the runners to the wave 1 area, which was the wave I was in.  We took off at 10:00am and at this point it was about 8:50, so I had 25 minutes before the announcer would call for us to start filling the corrals.  I did my usual routine like I do before all of my runs.  I didn't change anything for Boston.  This was just another run, well one hell of an exciting one at that.  But, I did my butt kicks, high knees, side to sides, grapevine, a few forward and backward sprints and stretched repeatedly.  I then found the nearest shrubs and relieved myself again.  It was funny, because the porta potty line was pretty long and close by, but I wasn't about to nervously wait in that line.  I was shocked to see girls relieving themselves in the same manner as myself (right in front of thousands of people)!

After the warm-up the announcer began directing wave one runners towards the corral.  I met another runner that was shooting for a similar time goal as myself and we jogged a bit towards the start and chatted about our running history and goals for the race.  Once I got to the corral, I thought for sure I couldn't go past my corral but they weren't too strict.  I was in corral 5 and since it was only about 9:25 at this point I continued walking forward and realized that the elite women were about to take off.  They were scheduled for a 9:32 start time. I though, wow, I could actually watched the official start of the elite woman taking off in the Boston Marathon.  I was not about to squander this opportunity.  So, I headed for city park right next to the starting line.  I found a good spot and peaked through other spectators.  On the far right hand side was none other than Kara Goucher all ready to go.  Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable.  The elites did a few stride outs, the National Anthem was sung and off they went.  I couldn't help but experience an adrenaline rush at that moment.  I then gathered myself and continued with a light warm up and relieved myself one last time.  The time was finally here as I headed for the corrals with just 5 minutes to go until the official wave 1 start of the Boston Marathon.  The race officials started announcing the elites at the front of the pack (Mutai, Mosop, Gebre, and of course Ryan Hall-the American).  This was absolutely amazing, I couldn't help but get in on the hype.  I of course still had a race to run myself though.  The National Anthem was again sung and after that all I could do was smile until the gun went off.  I smiled as I passed the volunteers and then nearly 3 minutes later I crossed the start line.  My 26.2 mile journey to Boston had officially begun....

I took off and immediately found it difficult to get into the rhythm and pace I had planned.  The streets were narrow and extremely crowded.  I hung around the outer edges and try to pass people that way, but it was still difficult.  I was only able to go at a 6:57 pace for the first mile.  However, I was not detered.  I knew this was probably a good pace to start off at anyways.  I was able to pick it up and settle into a pace I was more comfortable with after the first mile, but still had to weave in and out of the crowd.  The first 5 miles were all downhill, which sounds easy to the nonrunner, but that puts brutal stress on the quads which can kill you later on in the race.  One thing I noticed was that this course was one big rollercoaster.  I thought I had trained on hills, but nothing I did prepared me for the Boston Marathon course hills.  Back to the race....I got to mile 5 (Ashland) and the course flattened out a bit at this point.  I was a bit behind the 3 hour pace, but there was no need to panic.  I figured I could make it up slowly but surely.  Next up was Framingham (miles 6-8).  These towns were lovely; it was amazing to see how many people were out there to cheer us on.  There was literally no point in the entire course that lacked a spectator.  Absolutely unbelievable.

We then headed into the town of Natick.  I was hitting miles at between 6:48 and 6:49, but my Garmin's miles were a bit quicker than the courses miles so it probably marked me at a 6:52-6:53 pace (putting me a bit behind pace).  Next up was the town of Wellesley.  This is where the famous Wellesley girls scream, cheer, bang pans, rattle bells, and give kisses.  Yes, that's right, kisses.  At about the mile 12 mark I heard the loudest screams I'd ever heard in my life and I knew we were close.  It was an unbelievable sight passing through the town as the thousands of girls cheered us on and held signs that read things like:  "kiss me I'm from Oregon" or "kiss me, I love runners".  It was hard not to go too fast at this point as the adrenaline rush kicked in, but I held back.  Also, I resisted the urge to stop for a kiss haha.

Next up was the half way point at which I was clocked at a 1:30:02, almost exactly on pace to a 3 hour marathon.  I was feeling pretty good, but somehow out of sync.  I  just didn't quite have it mentally on this day.  This frustrated me, but I kept pushing on.  I knew the hills loomed ahead and I needed to continue to bust out mile by mile.  At mile 16 I saw the sign that said Newton and I admit I cringed a bit.  That meant hill time.  Sure enough, shortly after came a gigantic hill which I was able to cover with fair ease.  There was then a slight down hill and back up another hill.  I believe there were 7 in total and by the time I hit number 3 the first cramps set in.  This is something that any marathoner despises of. I was starting to hit the wall.  At mile 18 I felt slight twinges here and there and I had to slow the pace a bit to avoid a total collapse.  I started seeing the 3 hour dream slip away.  This disappointed me a bit, but I still held on to hope that if I could get through the hills, maybe I could coast a bit after that.

I got to mile 20 and then Heartbreak Hill was looming before me.  Heartbreak itself wasn't really that bad.  I honestly thought the one prior was worse.  What came after Heartbreak is what really put a damper on my race.  There was a slight up hill after Heartbreak at which point both of my calves decided to completely cramp up at the same time.  I am very stubborn though and refuse to stop in a race, so I kept pressing on in complete and total agony.  Nothing was going to stop me.  I knew at this point that achieving a sub 3 hour Marathon was out of my reach, but I still wanted to finish as strong as possible.  I made it to mile 23 without losing too much time.  I was on pace for a 3:02ish Marathon at this point.  That is when the cramps really started to hit the legs.  Twinges shot up different areas of my quads, groin, calves, etc, you name it.  Every step had to be taken ever so carefully to attempt to avoid a total cramp up.  It was extremely painful, but hey I live for this so I can't complain.  I just kept pushing on as the crowd thickened.  I tried to savor the moment, but the pain was so intense I just wanted to finish.  There was a girl that I was passing and she looked like she was in extreme pain as well as she let out squirmish sighs and then uttered profanities.  I encouraged her to keep going as I passed and said, "you're almost there, keep it up".  At this point in a Marathon something like that can go a long way in getting someone to the finish.  I would want someone to do the same for me.

These next few miles were absolutely killer, probably the toughest I've ever run in my life.  I just kept taking it mile by mile.  I kept telling myself you have to finish the Boston Marathon (like I was going to quit anyway).  I told a guy before the start that I would have run this race if I had broken my leg the day before.  Nothing was stopping me now, well, except for the damper these stupid cramps were putting on me.  I slowly but surely rattle off the miles (the last 3 were in the 7:33-7:37 pace).  So, I lost a good 2+ minutes in the final 3 miles.  As I rounded the right turn on to Hereford Street I saw the largest Marathon crowd in my life.  It was like I was floating on air.  It was absolutely amazing!  I looked from side to side as I ran as fast I could turning on to Bolyston for the last quarter of a mile as the finish line came into site.  I felt an overwhelming sense of joy as I ran down the street and admired the crowd.  I through my hands up in triumph and teared up after I crossed the line.  I had just finished the Boston Marathon and I was very proud.

Aside from my excitement of finishing the race; from a race standpoint I was very disappointed in my performance.  I know that I am fit enough to run a sub 3 and things just didn't go my way on this day.  Unfortunately it happened to be the day of perhaps the biggest race of my life, but I knew this was just the beginning of my running career anyways.  Plus, on the bright side I did set a PR of 3:04:44 (smashing my old PR by nearly 6 minutes) and again qualifying for Boston (barely however, since the new cutoff is 3:05-meaning I had only 15 seconds to spare).  I preceeded to get my foil heat sheet to stay warm and at this point the tears started to flow a bit.  They were tears of happiness, for I had prevailed and I realized I had just finished the most prestigious Marathon in the world with some of the world's top athletes.  I then continued down the road where I was proudly presented with my Boston Marathon finisher's medal, some post race food and electrolyte replacement.  Then I headed to retrieve my bag and found my family in the family meeting area where I proudly covered myself with my official Boston Marathon T-Shirt and Jacket and gleamed from ear to ear.  Looking back, this will be a race I will absolutely never forget.  I am very proud to have completed this race and although I fell short of my goal of a sub 3 hour time, it just motivates me to push harder in the future.

I realized after Boston that my running career has just begun.  I am an absolute addict.  I love the sport with all my heart and it drives me day in and day out.  I look forward to the countless races the future holds for me and I know without a doubt that I will crush times down the road that I thought were inconceivable.

Next major goal:  the Chicago Marathon in under 2:48 minutes.  I truly believe I can do this.  Boston has already lit a fire under my ass in terms of things I need to improve for Chicago.  I have already begun mapping out my training plan which will include more miles, yoga, a bit less strength training, plyometrics, and a focus on my diet (I need to lose about 10 pounds to be at racing wiehgt).  I believe I can do this and I am going to alter my focus going forward to do what I can to achieve this goal.  I have some tune up Marathons set for the course of the summer that I will use as training runs for Chicago.  I am certain I will break 3 hours at one of those.  I am excited for what the future holds and I thank you all for your support, it means the world to me:)

It was pitch dark in Burlington, MA as I set out for my run at 4am down the unknown streets as I chose I route I had no clue where it led to.  I ran on the main street which provided some lighting and did 5 mid run short sprints to keep the legs feeling fresh and fast.  We were headed to Boston at 7am to see Kara Goucher so I had to get the run in before that.

It was rainy and cold and I chose another random route near the hotel.  This one happened to be quite hilly.  Probably not the best choice before the Boston Marathon, but I ran it at a fairly slow speed.  I showered up after and again we hit the commuter rail for Boston.  1 more day baby!

Today I ran in my speed shoes (T7 racers) thinking that I may wear them in the race.  Bad idea, I got the most massive blister of my life now and I have just 8 days until the Boston Marathon.  I will run it no matter what, but this puts quite a damper on confidence.  One more week though and I can't wait to run this thing.

This was an excellent confidence boosting run.  I probably ran it a little faster than I should have, but I have been tempted to up the pace lately due to the reduced mileage.  It felt pretty good though for a training run and I ran at a similar pace to that of what I plan on running in the Marathon.

This was one of the shortest runs I have done in months.  I have to say, I am not a huge ran of doing such short runs.  I like doing atleast 8 miles and even that now seems miniscule.  I have also been debating as to what shoes I should wear at Boston.  I have these really lightweight racing flats that I wore at the Half Marathon in February and the 5k last month and they felt great but I am a bit nervous about wearing them in a Full Marathon.  So, today I tried out these racing flats that were a bit heavier than those, but still much lighter than my normal shoes.  I was not a fan.  It may however have been due to the slow pace of the recovery run.  I will give them another try on Sunday.

Wheels of  Motion 10K in Grand Rapids (at Grand Valley State University
Well, I have a lot to say about this race I guess.  I needed one last tune up before Boston.  Normally I wouldn't drive to Grand Rapids for a 10k, but it was the closest one we could find (plus Jordan and I said we were GVSU students so we got in for just 5 bucks--we're bad kids! lol).  The race didn't start until 10 and Jordan and I went to Panera and got some darn good Hazelnut coffee and a bagel and then hit the road for GR.  We always get to races so early, but we can't help it.  I always feel more in control and at ease if I get there atleast an hour in advance.  We got our race packets and checked out the trophy case in the rec center (GVSU has 4 National Championships for Div. 2 Football, it was kind of cool seeing those).  It was a nice cool 37 degrees and it was starting to drizzle just a bit.  Jordan and I hit the roads for about a 1.5 mile warm up.  The course was marked with chalk, so I was a bit concerned considering it was raining.  The race started down on the track that surrounded the football field.  I warmed up with some drills like I normally do (grapevine, side to side movements, butt kicks, knee raises, backwards running) and then ran a few easy laps around the track.  I had scoped out the competition pretty well and I figured a lot of the people were going to be doing the 5k anyways.  There were a few people there that I thought would be legitimate threats, but I knew I would be up near the front of the pack.  The race started and we took one lap around the track before setting out on the rest of the course.  Immediately, a few people bolted in front of me.  If there is one thing I've learned since I began running, it is to worry about your race strategy and not others.  I always see people that get that adrenaline rush and set out too quickly and then sure enough I pass them later on in the race.  I always have a race strategy that I rehearse in my head before the gun goes off.  Today my plan was to break 37 minutes in a 10k.  I knew I could do it, or thought I could atleast.  To accomplish this I would need to run just under 5:58 average for 6.2 miles.  Anyways, back to the race.  The first mile I held back.  The biggest mistake is going too hard in the first mile.  I planned on running it in 5:58 and that's what I did.  I was in 7th place up until just before the 1st mile but I could tell the people in front of me had made a crucial mistake and gone out way too fast.  I had planned on keeping this pace for the whole race.  Plus, some of them could have been running the 5k, but I wouldn't know for sure until the 10k and 5k runners split at about the 2 mile mark.  I then started passing a few guys just before mile 1 and I was sitting comfortably in 5th and not too much longer in 3rd place.  There was one guy that was way in front of myself and another.  I was hoping he was doing the 5k.  The other guy wasn't too far ahead of me and I figured if I stuck to my plan  I'd catch him eventually.  The good thing about having someone pretty close to you during a race is that it challenges you to push yourself.  This guy was ahead of me for the first 3 miles.  Once the 10k and 5k runners split off I noticed a biker not too far ahead of us.  I eventually caught the guy in front of me and noticed I was behind the biker (a biker usually leads the race so that the lead runner knows where to go).  It wasn't until almost mile 4 that I realized I was actually in first place, because the other guy that was way out in front was doing the 5k.  I pushed the pace as I passed the guy in front of me and thought that maybe we could work together a bit.  That thought passed quickly.  As I upped the pace, I noticed he started to fade a bit, so I upped the pace a bit more.  I wasn't sure if I should really be going this fast, but it felt good and I had it in me.  All of the sudden I noticed that the guy I had passed wasn't even right behind me anymore and as I went around a corner I saw him clinching his side as if he had cramped up.  I shouted some words of encouragement (because I love having competition and I hate to see someone suffer like that).  I continued to push the pace for the last few miles and I realized that I was going to win the race after about the 5 mile mark.  I thought that maybe it would be an exhilarating experience, but as I crossed the line and people cheered and screamed as I won-I just kept jogging and went back to find Jordan and helped him finish strong.  I didn't feel any different winning that race than any other race that I had given my all in.  It's not about winning the race to me or beating others, it's about beating myself and that is what I did.  I ran a 35:14 (6.01 miles) which equated to a 36:22 (5:52 pace) 10k and destroyed my previous time by over 2 minutes in less than 5 months.  I still think I had a little more in me though....

This was a very rainy and windy day.  I love running in the rain and was excited about it, but when I got out there I just wasn't feeling it.  I think that these races have kind of put a damper on my long runs the last few races, however I think that is kind of the point-to run on tired legs.  I went a lot easier than I did last Sunday.  Plus, I have to start backing off a bit and letting my body recover.  I was only supposed to run 17 miles and of course I had to do more than that.  I tried out the same shoes I wore Friday and they felt better at a faster pace, however my calves were extremely sore after.  This however may be partly due to the all out 10k I ran the day before, but I don't think so.  I have pretty much written these shoes off for the races.  It is between my Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10's that I primarily use in training or my Brook T7 racing flats (they are 6.4 ounces and extremely light).  I still have some time to decide.  I ran a lot more miles than I was supposed to this week.  I just hate cutting back the mileage, but I have to.  I really need to ease it down this coming week.  I did a pretty good job in controlling my caloric intake this week as well.  I am getting very anxious!
